#Blacklivesmatter- my thoughts on this movement/ hashtag

Warm greetings to everyone who decided to open this article to hear my honest opinion and honest thoughts on this very popular and misunderstood trend… Oh I’m sorry this isn’t a trend it’s a hashtag that turned into a movement, how delightful.

When I first saw this hashtag, #blacklivesmatter I flipped and then I got all mixed emotions. These were my exact thoughts:

” Black lives matter, really? So we’re playing the colour game, the race game. Can we just be people with no colours, no blacks, no whites, no browns. Okay, we get the fact that blacks have been discriminated for a long time but other races have had it bad too. I thought we were all in a quest to end racism not make blacks the dominant race. I get it, black lives matter but what about other races, don’t their lives matter too?”

Okay, okay, okay you got me. Those were not my “exact thoughts” but it was something along those lines.

I thought the #blacklivesmatter was really sweet and thoughtful especially because I’m black but I also thought that it was overlooking the main racism problem and taking the short cut. I also thought that it was discriminating as other races were not included. Remember these were my thoughts when I first heard about the movement.

After seeing the hashtag for the first time and having my first thoughts on it. I did what any other person would do, I took out my phone and did some research on this topic. The information I found blew my mind and totally changed my perspective. I finally realized that the hashtag and movement is not #onlyblacklivesmatter but it is #blacklivesmatter.

I think it was only natural for me to think the way I did, after all I’m a black teenage girl on a mission to stop inequality in the world. I don’t blame anybody for thinking the way I did but it is not quite the right way to look at things.

The #blacklivesmatter movement is a fight for justice and equality, not only for black people but for people of all races. We understand that all lives matter regardless of the colour and this movement does not limit that. In fact it expands it. Look at this way, we’re all on a quest to end racism. We indeed believe that all lives matter and that there is no race superior than the other but on our way to end racism we face a huge challenge. One( blacks) of us is endangered. Black people are murdered everyone. Shouldn’t we help them? Shouldn’t we all step in and help save their lives, after all we are a team, right? A team of human beings with no colours, on a mission to end racism.

If I wasn’t clear enough, here are pictures that really opened my mind about this whole thing :
